Acacia Tree in Guindulman, Bohol

Acacia Tree in Guindulman, Bohol

Trees that had been for centuries in the town of Guindulman, gone in just a blink of an eye….. They did not cry, they did not beg for mercy, they just got cut down.. I thought we already understood the importance of trees these days.

With the onslaught of Typhoon Ondoy and Typhoon Pepeng to our country, recent calls for measures to prevent climate change have been reiterated. The demand for a “green” president started to surface with the fast approaching 2010 presidential elections. Indeed, Ondoy, Pepeng and Ramil, should have been our wake up call. They say there has been global warming for a long time and the threat has just been hyped, but I think that this is not a question of how long global warming has existed in our world… the real question should be how long will we last with global warming and climate change.

With all these thoughts on our environment becoming popular these days, I was shocked when I read the newspaper, The Bohol Standard, and found out that centuries-old acacia trees in the town of Guindulman have been cut. Now why on earth would they do that?!?? As I read the newspaper further, I found out it was for a very noble purpose. Yes, they were cut for a public purpose, and that purpose is reportedly: “TO GIVE A PROMINENT VIEW OF THE NEWLY PAINTED FRONTAGE OF THE 2-STOREY PUBLIC MARKET BUILDING”. I appreciate whoever had the idea of cutting down the trees, !@#!%!$!@#$!@$, they certainly had the political will to do the nasty things for the sake of the public uuuuugh!. I would also like to congratulate the DENR for a job well done. These people were very sensitive to the needs of the people. Yes, it would be no problem to cut down the trees, we could just plant new ones anyway, after all it only takes about a hundred years for them to grow to the size of those which were originally cut.

It turns out, these trees were cut around September this year, and I only found out about it today because it went out in a local newspaper. I don’t have a lot of pictures of it or the exact details, I’ll just post what I can. Hopefully we can bring this matter to our proper officials and congratulate them for a job very well done! *sigh*

That is the only picture I have, if you have more, please feel free to share. I couldn’t post those which were in page 5 since they were in black and white, my camera phone doesn’t have such a good resolution. This is my first blog, so I hope I’ll be able to share a lot of info to you guys, and hopefully the readers will be kind in their comments :P . Thanks!
